30th July 2009 Photojournalism: Capturing the heartbeat of a wedding
The single most important trend in today's wedding photography market is photojournalism.
Photojournalism, by definition, is simply documenting an event without interfering or influencing the images. This is as opposed to traditional portraiture, which requires the photographer to be hands on and to direct the subjects in creating each image.

Wedding photojournalism is absolutely hands off. Its about taking the emotion of the day, the intangible, and catching it on film without making it happen. Traditional portraiture still has a place in weddings, but the best photographer will understand which style is preferred by the bride and groom and balance the mix accordingly. Gone are the days of checklist poses and an hour of posed images before the reception. And while most clients will still want at least a few formal images, even those can be done within a minimum amount of time and still capture the personality and pure excitement of the wedding day.

Denis Reggie, considered by many to wedding photographers to be the father of wedding photojournalism, has helped many photographers understand the need to capture the decisive moment.
Decisive moments are those split second details, expressions, mannerisms, and interactions that make each subject unique. You must push the shutter button at just the right moment to capture the emotion and essence of your subject.

Wedding photojournalists must be not only invisible, but skilled ins anticipating each decisive moment. To do this, start as early in the day as you can and observe everything.
Keep asking yourself "what makes this wedding different from the others".
